DANBURY — For 21 years, Christie Cardinale had plied her trade — hairdressing — in the same salon. However, it was a salon she didn’t own.

Then one day, she learned about space available at 129 Padanarum Road in Danbury. Before too long, a new sign appeared there, reading “Christie & Company,” and Cardinale was in business for herself.

“It was time,” she said.

She credits her boyfriend, Jay Blom, with prompting her when he spotted a former barber shop that was empty on Padanarum Road. She said Blom renovated the space to suit her vision and in time for Christie & Company to open last month.

Cardinale and the other hairdressers of Christie & Company, Nicole Nathanson and Lisa Reiss, had an grand opening Aug. 19 at which Cardinale estimated about 150 people showed up.

“It was crazy. I felt so loved and honored that so many people would be interested in my business and would support it,” Cardinale said. “I’m used to seeing my clients one at a time. To see so many of them at once — wow!”

The salon offers hair services from cuts to color to updos, as well as brow and lip waxing. A wash, cut and blow-dry is $30; $18 for men; or $15 for customers under 10. Single-process color costs $45 and perms start at $45.

Christie & Company is open Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. They take appointments, but walk-ins are welcome, too.

The stylists will travel to do hair for wedding parties, unlike some salons that require the party to come to them. These events are priced upon request.

This type of client accommodation likely would come as no surprise to Serina Konomos, of Danbury, a client who followed Cardinale to the new salon. She gives high marks for customer service.

“Christie’s the type of person who does the extra, beyond the normal. I shifted with her,” Konomos said. “It’s like a good doctor that you like and trust. I personally feel it’s the same with a good hairdresser.”

As for the new location, Konomos approves. “I love it. It’s really cute. It fits her personality. She decorated it really well.”
